This Is How The New 3 Series Looks
Images of the new BMW 3 Series executive saloon have leaked online, ahead of the car's full debut at the Paris motor show later this week.
The new Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class rival is expected to go on sale early next year, with the range featuring regular petrol and diesel engines plus a new version of the 330e plug-in hybrid with more power and electric range. The current 330e can travel for 25 miles before its 2.0-litre petrol engine joins the electric motor.
The core of the range, however, will still be the stalwart 320d and 330d 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre diesels. In the current 3 Series, it's the 320d engine we recommend for its mixture of performance and fuel economy. BMW's xDrive four-wheel-drive system will be offered on most models.
The pictures also confirm the existence of a range-topping M340i version, featuring a 3.0-litre petrol engine with 360bhp. A performance-oriented diesel model, the M340d, will be offered too, featuring a 320bhp 3.0-litre diesel engine. These sporty versions of the 3 Series will be targeted against the rival Audi S4 and Mercedes-AMG C43. A full-fat BMW M3 will arrive later.
Inside, the new 3 Series features a digital dashboard, which is likely to offer customisation similar to Audi's Virtual Cockpit digital display. The latest version of BMW's iDrive infotainment system can also be seen, and while the screen is expected to feature touch and gesture controls, there is a rotary dial on the centre console too – meaning it should still be easy to use on the move.
While the leaked images show that the 3 Series will retain much of the same look as the current car, it has also grown in size. In fact, the new 3 Series is expected to feature more space between its front and rear axles, which should lead to more room inside for rear passengers, and for luggage too.
